Birgu (a small city in Malta) being the first harbour town and city has a strong maritime history. Elements of this seafaring past are illustrated at the Malta Maritime Museum. This painting commemorates Maltese sailors and their dedication to a nautical life. Interestingly, the mustache was a privilege given to Maltese born sailors in the Royal Navy as new recruits were not keen on shaving their mustache since this gave them a manly look.
The sitter’s distant look reminds me of the journeys we have to take to reach our own destinations.
